I am going to buy aftermarket cams for my car and I was thinking to my self i don't even know what stock cams do. Can some one help me better understand the function of cams in our cars and how upgrading to aftermarket cams can improve the performance of your car. Thank you in advance.

The cams are driven by either a chain or belt synched to the crankshaft.

The cams have lobes on them which make the valves (intake and exhaust) open at the right time, right amount of time and the a specific amount of opening of the valve ..(e.g. the lift)

Aftermaket cams alter those things-- duration and lift of the valves. so to get more performance, a cam may be setup to have the valves open longer or have more lift or both.

Differnt cams will have different effect on the engine output. For example-- Some may put the power band higher in the RPM range or they could possibly improve lower end torque. It all depends on the car and what the cam was designed to address.

The camshaft works with other mechanical devices IE. lifters push rods rocker arms and valves. Aftermarket cam shafts can open the valves sooner close later and more lift in thousandths of an inch. The hole object is to enable the combustion chamber to take a bigger gulp of fuel air mixture and producing more power. Unless many other items are addressed: Fuel injection, carburetors, intake manifolds, temperature and a tuned exhaust system little benefit is realized.

Ultimately, a cam (or cams) operates opening and closing the valves (through operating other parts).

Usually they will upgrade performance by giving you more power in the upper RPM ranges with possibly no gain or even a loss at lower RPM. You'll have to rev your engine up quite a bit (possibly beyond the stock red line) to take full advantage of this.

An aftermarket camshaft (also known as a highlift cam) has bigger lobes to open the valves longer, meaning the inlet valves take more air and fuel in and the exhaust valves stay open longer to get more gases out, which them increase the combustion ratio, which makes your car go faster.
