I think you will do perfectly fine with a natural birth! i NEVER had an epidual with any of my kids because of the risks injuring the spine and the fact that you go numb down there..ehh, Just couldnt do it!...but it went great, i did have an IV (stadol) which helped the pain!...Just ask about the IV..:) youll be okay with just that... the pain is well worth it at the end!...:)

When i had my baby i decided that i wanted a natural birth with no epidural etc. the one thing that i did do was to keep my options open because anything can happen on the day and in the end I chose to have the epidural. Childbirth is very emotional and hard to gauge especially if you haven't been through it before. I would recommend that you keep your options open. Don't think that you are less of a person because you chose to have an epidural or other types of pain relief, every birth is different some are quick and there is no time for choice and others are slow. Listen to the midwives ask lots of questions. Yes it is a bit scary and painful but it is also full of every other emotion that you can possibly feel in one day. I think you should have done the birthing classes as they help prepare you for any options that you may need to take so you have insight. Maybe you could go to the hospital and ask for some help before the big day comes just so you are prepared. It may seem a little less scary if you know more.
Hope it all goes well and you enjoy your baby.

I'm weighing the same options at the momment. I know I would prefer a natural birth, but I think that if it came down to it, and I couldn't handle the pain, I wouldn't refuse an epidural.
I went to the birthing classes and I didn't learn a single thing that I didn't already know. I honestly think it was a huge waste of money, and that the information I've received from my doctor has been much more helpful, and FREE.
My best advice would be to do tons of research on the pros and cons of all pain relief options and that way when you come to make a decision it will be an informed one.
Good luck and congrats!

I have had 2 epidurals and 2 wonderful births...in fact I wouldnt dialate the first time due to my tendancy to fight instead of relaxing during contractions, if your that scared you likely wont dialate enough, so I recommend the epidural for at least this time around. I endured the pain for 24 hours before the gave me an epidural and 2 hours after I was fully dialated and gave birth very easily. Ultimately its up to you, so if your in labor and its going well for you...give it a try...if not and the pain is too bad the epidural DOES NOT take away from the birth experience at all...in fact I think it adds to it as you can focus on whats happening better without "freaking out" about the pain.

I was determined to have my baby natural the first time. 7 years later I found out I was pregnant again the second time around I went Epideral and I do not regret it at all. It was sooooo much easier and a whole lot less painful. Both of my babies were born perfectly healthy. The first time I was in alot of pain and by the time I got to the doctor there was no going back. They actually asked me if I wanted a Tylenol (like that was going to work).
It all boils down to what you prefer. Good luck and congrats.

epidural all the way. I got the epidural when I was 5 cm dialated. The pain was much lesser once its in your system. It is much faster at least for me it was. No matter what you decide to do giving birth is painful. Try to relax and breath. I did not take any birthing classes. You will be fine. Also a nurse had told me to sit on a chair in the shower wih really warm water and relax. Drink chamomile tea. This would help with the birth as it gets closer. Good luck congrats on the baby.

Epideral. You should do the Epideral since you did not learn how to work through a contraction. The labor room is not a good place to learn. However, you will have to go through labor for a while and you will be uncomfortable.
Better yet......Get into a birthing class ASAP. It is better for you and you will be less scared of the birth. I was very frighten to give birth and after understanding what was going to happen I became unbelievably calm.
Good luck!

If you are scared of pain epidural. Especially if you have not taken birthing classes. If you want to do it naturally, I suggest getting some classes in quick. The pain is mind over matter. If you go in worried about it, it will hurt even more.

First of all congratulations, I understand how you would feel scared. I have 4 children and I was afraid with all of them. My first son I had naturally OH MY GOD the pain, but it want kill you.
My last 3 pregnancies I made sure that I got the epidural because I could not deal with that intensed pain. The epidural is like majic the pain goes away and you are able to enjoy the remaining of your pregnancy without all of the pain however, when you begin too push you start too feel pressure down there but it's not so bad. I think it all depends on how big your baby is.
I am not trying to scare you but once the baby comes out you feel so good.. Good Luck to you!!!

I too was afraid of the pain, but I wanted every drug they could give me. I ended up getting the epideral, it was painful and it didn't work. I had problems with my back for months afterwards, from where the needle was inserted.
Have you thought about something else like a cervical block? That is what I will do next time. Talk to your doctor about what your options are.

I'm only 17weeks pregnant and i have the same problem.. I have asked lots of people and most of them that have had an epidural have had back problems since.. I'm still not sure what im going to do.. I will probably try to go all natural but if the pain gets to bad then I will go ahead and get the shot..
