The better question to ask is "Can the Cubs stay healthy AND win the World Series." The NL Central is by far one of the most balanced divisions in sports (No clear dominant team). The Cardinals limped into the playoffs, but dominated when it counted most. If the Cubs stay healthy they have a strong (but not guaranteed) shot of being the NL representative in the World Series. However, without a healthy rotation (Prior) and an even stronger and healthier bull pen (Woods) the Cubs will be forced to rely heavily on their offense to carry them in games. If the Cubs happen to play against the Phillies, Cardinals or Mets with a battered pitching staff, their offense will not be enough to carry them past offensive juggernauts found in the NL East. Health, health and health is the big question. A Healthy Derek Lee(combined with Nomah(r) and a healthy pitching staff should carry this team into the 90+win level and hopefully a playoff berth...IF, they're healthy...what are the odds of them staying healthy? About as good as them winning the World Series.

Well, Chicago needs to make it to the playoffs first, and going to the playoffs is going to hinge on how well their pitching holds up. Zambrano has stepped up the past few years, and Wade Miller has done an admirable job, but can Lilly and Marquis live up to their hype and earn the money that they signed for? And of course, there's the Cubs' eternal prospects, Mark Prior and Kerry Wood. Can the two of them avoid injury? Actually, that needs to be re-phrased since Wood already suffered an injury falling out of a hot tub!

Even more questionable than the rotation is the bullpen, and for all their wheelings and dealings in the off-season, the Cubs didn't acquire a decent relief pitcher. Wood has the possibility of doing great things from the pen (a la Eric Gagne and John Smoltz), but aside from him, there's no one else I'd want to see coming out in a tight game.

On the bright side, Chicago's offense should be decent, and that will make up for some failings of the pitching staff. Replacing Dusty Baker with Lou Piniella will do some good as well, and fortunately for the Cubbies, there's nowhere else to go but up.

I think that the Cubs have the potential (as any team with Wood, Prior, and Soriano do) to win the Series but I don't think Piniella will fill any holes in the rest of the team.

I think they have a small chance with a good division...a decent pitching staff....they do have a good line up though....loko for Milwakee to be good with the Cards and Astros (Clemens is going to sign with them) Most likely the champ is gonna be the winner of the East Sox or Yanks if the Sox stay healthy and have a good rotation they will win the whole thing

Not good at all. I can think of one good player and thats Alfonso. Its not a one man game. Maybe if Kerry Wood and Mark Prior werent completley useless they would get somewhere besdies last place but dont expect much from the cubs this year. Thank Steve Bartman if your dissapointed.

The same that Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, and Alec Baldwin hug George W. Bush.

They will be contenders this year but give it a year or 2 (if they can zam back after this year) if they do that they will have a good chance. they need time to get their young pitchers to develop after prior and wood kinda left a huge hole in the rotation due to injury.
