I think it's brass, its a yellowy metal sheet that looks like it hasn't been cleaned for years, in the front entrance. I've got a polish, but I want to know how to clean it first, without scratching it with a scourer (which I already did in a small section ). preferably with everyday cleaning products(not expensive) Thanks.

Brasso is the best brass cleaner I've ever used. Just apply with a soft cloth, let it dry then rub it to a shine.

I'll assume you mean a brass threshold. Use a product named Brasso, available in any hardware store. It puts a dazzling shine on polished brass.

It will depend if there is a clear sealer over it. Lets go with a no - you can purchase a variety of silver polishes which will work well without scratching. To keep the shine after cleaning, spray with a clear lacquer or varnish (Satin).

Try something with amonia - that will clean the tarnish as well. Since you are using a brass cleaner, soapy water and a sponge should clean it before you clean it. But.....why? You should polish it first then clean it.

A great metal polish AND cleaner is Never-Dull, found in any truck stop; may be at Wal-Mart, too, and there is more than one brand name.

If it is brass, soak it with Coca Cola. It does wonders for brass army buttons and pennies.
