How far along do you have to be in order to tell if it is going to be a boy or a girl?

Most doctors want you to be at least 18 weeks pregnant. And they'd rather you be 20. It is much easier to tell the sex of the baby when you are farther along. At 16 weeks they'd be 50% telling you the truth and another 50% hoping they are telling you the truth.

At 18-20 weeks the ultrasound machine is able to detect various organs inside and outside (if you know what I mean there) to help them determine the actual sex....with no guessing involved.

Good luck.

most the time you will have and ultrasound around 20 weeks and they can tell what the baby is. I had an ultrasound at 16 weeks and found out i was having a boy (they were right).

We waited until 18 weeks and even still it was difficult. There are many factors in finding out the sex of your baby including baby's position, size, development etc. You really want to wait as long as the dr suggests so you can get the best picture possible. Sometimes you only get the one ultrasound and you want to make sure there is evidential proof right in front of you before you decide blue or pink.
Good Luck!

Usually at about 20 weeks...and that is only if baby stays still during the ultrasound.

any time after 18 weeks.....they say it's more accurate the closer to 20 weeks. also, my doctor told me to drink a glass of ice cold OJ right before the ultrasound. The cold insures your baby will be awake, and the natural sugar from the juice gives your baby a little jolt so he/she spreads out more for a better view!

Hello,
I was 16 weeks when I found out. Some wait until about 20 weeks I believe.

I asked the ultrasound tech this same question and she said they usually don't begin to look until about 16 weeks.

I have heard of as early as 16 weeks, but around 20 weeks is best for more accurate results.

I found out at 18 weeks a friend of mine found out at 16 weeks, but your chances are better around 22 weeks.
