I always thought the two worked together or not at all.

hi there.

usually they do work together.

most speedometers are driven using a cable that spins. this spinning makes the pointer on the speedometer go up. this spinning also makes gears rotate and the odometer will track miles. so on a mechanical speedometer; the gears can go bad.

other speedometers are driven using an electronic signal. the odometers in these cars use gears and a tiny motor to drive the odometer system. so on some electrical speedometers; the gears , motor or circuit board problem.

They work off the same input, but nothing says that the odometer gear can't break inside the unit.
