If you start taking the pill within five days of beginning your menstrual cycle (the menstrual cycle begins on the first day of red bleeding not spotting), you will have pregnancy protection from the very first pill. If you begin taking the pill at another time in your menstrual cycle, you must use a different form of contraception for seven days.
