You can use a heat gun and a paint scraper. It's a little slow but a lot less work that sanding. It's faster with two people.

BEWARE OF SANDING...!! especially if you have children or someone who has breathing problems. the dust you create will infiltrate everywhere and, depending on the glue used, may be very irritating to some. by all means ventilate AND wear a good dust mask.
1.... if you are planning to restore the wood floor, rent a floor sander to speed things up and get a nice even surface.

2....another possibility (the best way and possibly the easiest) if you are going to install linoleum or tile is to re-surface your floor with an underlayment made especially for that purpose (7/32 luan plywood will also work). it is'nt hard to do and you will have an excellent base for your new floor. just ask a few questions at you local home center on installation and go for it. only simple tools are required, ie: circular or jig saw, hammer, tape measure, and a 6 inch putty or drywall blade ( to apply seam filler).

I guess it really depends what you are going to put back over it....if putting carpet I would'nt do anything to floor....if putting something else, try renting a floor sander....it takes some work but probably take less time...just be sure you open window and have fan blow it out because dust will get everywhere.....
