Do girls still like to read this book or is it too old fashioned now?

I was enchanted by this book as a young adult. I thought Heathcliff was "so romantic" too.
But after I grew older and re-read the book, I couldn't believe what an absolute monster Heathcliffe was. And the woman, why did she not marry him to start with?
Funny how time changes your perceptions.
I'd still recommend the book though. Most romantic next to "Anna Karenina" by Tolstoi, also a tragedy.
Sigh...

I read it in an upper-division English class in college about five years ago. I'd be suprised to learn it was commonly taught in high schools. I loved it, but I remember a few students saying that it was hard to get into the book because it had no likable characters. I like it better than Jane Eyre, which I'm also fond of. Emily seems to have been the wilder of the two more-famous Brontes.

I think it is still a great read for girls. The subject is still very contemporary and there is still tons of reasons to debate whether Heathcliffe was the ultimate romantic hero or a villain. I have always voted for villain myself. Most books - no matter how they are - can be compared to contemporary times. Even Shakespeare - believe it or not, kids!!!

I had to read the book for a class in school. To be honest, I'd be extremely surprised if the average girl ever even heard of the book. It's not exactly pop culture.
