The palms are an off-shore manmade island development in the shape of palm trees. Several apartment buildings, houses, and other businesses have been built there. Because it is not mainland UAE, foreigners have been allowed to buy on these islands.
There are also other manmade islands being formed called "The World." This is due to the fact that the islands are made to resemble continents and other landforms of the earth. Each island will have its own theme. One is a cooking school island, for example.
