It would require a lot of painful compromises and miraculous diplomacy. I think Europe is better off being economically unified while still being a lot of sovereign nations.

Europe is a collection of nation-states that have different aspirations and policies. France and the UK have legacy commitments from their colonial days that are largely welcomed by the ex-colonies. The Netherlands (Holland) seeks to achive a balance of contentment through liberal legislation; Belgium knits together a bifurcated society with some success, probably because of their superb beer. Spain teaches UK chavs what it is like to have a decent police force, except in Ibiza. Portugal bimbles along sweetly, and Ireland revels in unprecedented economic growth, takes all that it can from Europe, but does not contribute a single frigate or squadron of fighter aircraft to its own, let alone collective European defence.
Furthermore, each nation pursues its own historical agenda. Ireland, having established its right to its status as a republic by acquiescing to Nazi atrocities by remaining neutral in WW2, continues to justify its neutrality by objecting, albeit tacitly, to the partition of Ireland, without doing a single thing to propose, think up, or devise an agreement that would allow a unified Ireland in which the Northern Unionists would feel comfortable France is a nation likely to have to deal with civil war in the near future. The UK has laws, passed in 2003, that make it a criminal offence for two 13 year olds to kiss (yes! this is right! Sexual Offences Act 2003!)

Given this catalogue of differences lurking underneath a thin duvet of capitalistic unity, any political European consensus has as much chance as an Orange Sash in the Falls Road in Belfast, an Animal Rights Campaigner in Pamplona, or a teetotal non chocolate eater in certain environs in Antwerp.

Well it worked across the pond and they have evolved into the most powerful nation in the world at the moment.
The only real drawback is language, but then I cannot understand someone from Tyne-side, so French or German shouldn't be that great a problem.
Only thing is, Shhh, keep the idea from the Americans or they might want to invade us first!!

What more unelected politicians like the degenerates we have now?

They have outlawed smoking in the work place, no more smokers rooms - except for the EU parliament buildings, they have just passed a bill giving themselves the rights they have just denied to everyone else!

Assholes!

If Britain wants to punch above its weight, then this is the way to go. Sometimes, to get a little power, you have to give a little power.
