If a person is giving you the opportunity to convince them not to kill themself, then they really just need some kind words, and attention. They need to feel that they are not alone, and that someone cares.
Because, if they really wanted to be dead, then they would not have told anyone.
People that are vocal about being suicidal, want people to get concerned, and upset for them!

I do this a lot--relate so many things to a certain song--
Momentary Setback --by Marc Broussard

Staring out the window, watching the world go by
Sometimes it's as if God takes too long
Why don't I just take my own life--
But then my better sense kicks in , sit back and take a breath
Why am I thinking like that, I'm only thinking of myself..

Slow down, boy, relax , momentary setback
Don't take it so fast
Slow down, boy, relax, you'll make it back
Quick, fast in a hurry , yeah

Standing at the water's edge as my dreams float by
I can't remember a time when anything went right
I might just keep stepping on into the river's arms open wide
But I hang on and ride, pray the night, every life is a gift
Holy light, sanctified

slow down boy , relax, momentary setback......

If I could get across the same intent as the words to this song, it might help someone, somehow.

I would tell them that they are being selfish and not thinking about the lifetime of scars they would be leaving behind and the damage it would cause their family and friends. I would tell them to learn to get over whatever they need to get over and buckle down and get tough and that life is precious and you should never take your own ever! I would tell them that they need to learn to find joy in the simple things in life again and to learn to love themselves for who they are and try to learn to accept others for who they are as well. I would tell them that I would be there for them and mean it and if they ever felt down, to call me and just be there for them. A lot of times suicide is caused by depression which has been said to be anger turned inside the person and they don't know how to vent their frustrations about their anger. In severe cases, they need medical help and that could also be helpful, if needed. I would ask them to pray with me and give them tons of support.

Depends....Anyone who says they are going to, normally is asking for help...Its those who say nothing who always follow through, or try...If someone told me they were concidering it, i would call in a 5150 to 911 and have them get help with professionals....
