What are the actual rules, or what should the rules be?
I don't think there are any rules right now, and if there are, they're not being followed from what I can see.
Marriage rules should be pretty basic - honesty, fidelity, respect and commitment. If both partners follow those basics, there's very few problems. Most problems in a marriage fall under failing to follow one of those basics.

Every couple determines the rules for their own marriage. We have 4 simple rules and 2 rules of thumb in our marriage. These work for us, but these are by no means what other couples use.
1. NO HITTING. (this includes all forms of abuse)
2. NO LYING. (small white lies are acceptable. example: "No, I don't know what your best friend is getting you for your birthday." When in fact you helped his best friend pick it out.)
3. NO CHEATING. (Physical and/or emotional. Discuss what both forms entail, do not assume that he/she will know what you consider cheating)
4. NO STEALING.
Rules of Thumb. (for behavior)
1. Would you do what you are doing if your BF/GF/Spouse was standing right behind you and looking over your shoulder? No? Stop doing it, it is wrong. Yes? Continue on and have a good time.
2. Pick your fights. Is this issue truly worth fighting over? No? Stop arguing, let it go. Yes? Stick to your guns until they agree or a compromise can be reached.

People and women are not to be trusted to follow the rules. You should know about this since your a cop and pulling over the wemen in their SUV's all the time.
The thing about women is they use all the rules to their advantage and will bend and break the rules no problem. But if a man were to try any of that, oh boy its the end of the world and the lady takes half his stuff. BS
