I have a 99 Mustang and for some reason it's stuck in the defrost blow direction. I'd really like an idea of where to start looking to resolve the problem.

No do not use WD-40, it is not a lubricant. Always use something that has silicone in it. WD-40 says it can be used as a lubricant, but it actually de-lubricates. You need to look for a vacuum check valve. It can be a small inline plastic valve, that is inline with a vacuum line near the glove box area that controls the blend door. It has probably gone bad and is why your blend door is stuck in the defrost position. Some vehicles have a large metal check valve that is bolted to an inner part of the frame or on the firewall. This is your best best, if the cable like in the previous post, that is on your control panel, is still connected. Your 99 stang is not that old, so my best bet is the check valve, unless your control panel is vacuum controlled like some vehicles with push button controls. If this is the case you will need to trace the plastic vacuum line from behind the control panel and see if it is severed. To fix this you need to get the correct size of the line, go to your nearest automotive parts shop and buy yourself some rubber vacuum line and just add it between the break. Good luck!

in back of those controls, under the dash, there ought to be a couple of black or silver sleeves with solid steel control wires in side of them. some thing like the throttle assembly on a lawn mower.
spray wd-40 up into the cables sleeves best you can, and also the control arms the cables connect to.

Vacuum leak somewhere. Defrost is the default setting when something goes awry with that system. Unless it's electronically activated (highly unlikely), you have a vacuum leak or one of your vacuum check valves has failed.
