The Romans were masters of "Impalement" and the person that was "impaled" from what I understand, never died a graceful death. The most revered way among the Romans was to slowly slide the victim down on the stake. This was apparently quite painful, believe it or not!?
Vlad the Impaler killed scores of people this way and was the inspiration for the modern day tale of Dracula.
I think I will take a pass on going out this way if I have my choice.

To impale.
In the Greco-Roman world, this was considered an honorable way to die in a situation where dishonor was practically unavoidable. The Greek hero Ajax died this way, as represented on a black-figure vase by the painter Exekias. In Shakespeare, Julius Caesar's assasin M. Junius Brutus impales himself in the dramatic climax.

I believe you mean impalement. A popular method was to plant a sharpened stake in the ground approximately waist high, and set someone atop it so that it penetrated his anus.
His wrists were then cut, and as he lost blood, he could no longer stand upon his toes, and would gradually slide down the shaft.
