its about how far the electrons have to travel in order to reach lowest energy. they short they travel, the less energy the use to make the light. This cause the wavelengths of the light to become shorter or longer thus making different colors

photons (light) are emitted when an electron gives up some energy. When it does that it moves from one energy level to a lower energy level. The amount of energy in the photon is always the difference between the two energy levels, and that difference is characteristic of the element concerned. But the energy in the photon defines its frequency, as Planck discovered, and that defines its colour. If you use this verbatim then you've learned nothing and will be a really half ássed physicist or maybe nothing much at all in the fullness of time. Fire your own bullets; they're more effective. Elements do.

Flame Test? Heat caused compound to vapourise. This produces some atoms which have electrons promoted into higher orbitals that their ground state. When the electrons fall back to their normal shells, energy as visible light is emitted at a characteristic frequency to that element. This is determined by the energy level difference between the shells involved and the number of electrons involved in promotion (the number of electrons is different for each element in the periodic table) hence an identifiable emission spectra is produced.
