Obviously your Windows Boot system is corrupt whether its because of a software issue, virus, spyware, bogus software etc. If you use a filesharing program like (Limewire, Bearshare, etc) then you probably installed some crap that is interfering with your system. Try a system restore to a period that it actually worked or reinstall you OS. But also try some freeware from freewarefiles.com like ccleaner, or a Windows tune up software and also a start-up manager to stop software thats not needed at start-up sometimes unneeded programs cause shutdown problems.

This happened to me the other day. My on button was sticking. Not the swirch but the button that's build into the front bezel. It was warm in the room and the plastic seems to have swelled. I pushed it in square and it's fine again. A software issue can't be at fault if you take the power away and then put it back and the unit fires up. Once you take away power there is no way to hold programs in RAM so they all unassign. When you plugged back in, it booted to login?

Either there is a problem in the power supply itself or there is a problem with the software on the hard drive, or also the power button could be broke. i had a problem before with it turning on and not shutting off, it turned out to be the power supply itself, but it could be any of the ones i listed.

Download and install this program: http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp/index.html
It may turn it off.
P.S. Hard disks are meant to stay on.

you have software problems. my suggestion would be to haev a proffessional look at it. or you could just wipe the harddrive and reinstall windows, but this coild take lots of $$ and time.
