Double clutching and complete stop sometimes helps; works well after it warms up. Has 83,000 miles on it.

no adjustment for this. changing the transmission oil my help though.

I would start by asking toyota to recheck their reliability stats, before claiming they have the best . Check owners manual to see proper oil to use. If its never been changed since new, then I doubt thats the problem. An 04 most likely takes ATF rather than gear oil. Their is a clutch adjustment, which might be the issue.

I would find the correct oil for it and do an oil change and refill with the recommended oil.
To my way of thinking it has been filled with the wrong oil

If cold run allow car warm up

try checking trans gear lube when you remove plug usually on right side of trans. should be level with hole.may need changed though.

i think it's just how theyre made. i have the same issue.
