She's going off on one of her rampages again..

I love and need my jeep. It's how I get to school, work, a concurrent college class, the lake, the library, and to the hospice I am starting to volunteer at.

I just need to know if, legally, she could take it away. The deed is completely in my name (my grandpa bought it for me last year and had it switched to me).

I can't let her have it. I hate being stuck at home. With her. It's so bad for me psychologically and for my grades when she yells at me. I'm trying so hard.

Is the jeep mine no matter what or does she, as a parent, have a legal right to take it away?

I am just about to turn 17. My grandfather bought it for me last year, it was only a few thousand, so neither my parents nor I paid for it, but the deed has my name alone on it.

"No she cant. If its in your name, its your Jeep. However, I suggest, assuming you still would like to have a place to live, that you try and calm things down with your mother. She's supported you all your life!"

Hahaha. Not very well!

I'd actually rather she do that (kick me out). It'd save me the trouble of living with her.

"Personally, I think she's nuts to go this route. And it usually stems from wanting to have control over you.
She doesn't want to let go. And I hate to say this, unfortunately, she may not even be doing so much out of love and the need to be needed, as to just plain and simply have control.
Anyway, with that all being said, just keep in mind the consequences that she may lay down. And know what you will do if she does.
Otherwise, she does not have the "legal" right to take your jeep from you.
Good luck!! I know, believe me, you are going to need it. "

Yes, it is just for control. It's sad, but..I've accepted it.

And thank you! =)

"Sorry wether you like it or not your mom can prohibit you from using your jeep expecially if she is the one paying for the gas or insurance.. she is responsible for you until you are 18 just try and get along and make the best of it "

She pays for gas occasionally, but I could pay for all if I needed to. My grandfather also pays for my insurance.

And no, I don't do drugs or party. I have my G.P.A. to worry about and concentrate on! It's a 3.55 and I'm trying to get it up since my freshman year (when I began living alone with my mom..) was not the best year for my grades. I've been taking more AP and Honors classes to raise it (I make A's and B's in them).

If you have the title in your name, then she cannot "legally" take it from you. However, she could be playing the "as long as you live in my house" game.
What I mean by that is that she may say that if you don't surrender the jeep, she will kick you out.
So if she is willing to go to those extremes, then you have to be able to know what you will do when you call her bluff.
I know all about this, my mother used to do things like this to me all the time when I was young and lived home.
She still tries to this day, and I'm 45 married and have grown kids of my own.

Your mother does not have the right to take away you car if it's in your name. But she can kick you out of her house. So you must be willing to accept whatever consequences arise from you maintaining to use the car. Furthermore, if she takes the jeep somewhere where you can't find it, are you willing to report you mother to the police for auto theft. I had a question though, it doesn't seem like you are 18. So how can you have a vehicle in your name. I mean, sure if you bought it cash you could, but if there is a loan on it, someone else has the right to the vehicle as well. You cant obtain a loan by yourself if you under the age of 18.

If you are over 18 and the title is in your name - there is basically nothing she can do but make your life miserable. She cannot take away the jeep legally. The real problem is how will you deal with telling her this? I would enlist the help of your grandparents since they bought it for you. She is more likely to listen to them than she will to you. Sounds like you need the intervention of some calm, logical adults where your mom is concerned..

Are you a minor? Are you living under your mothers roof? Does she support you? Buy your food and pay the mortgage/rent? Buy most of your clothes? Pay your medical insurance/bills? Are you still in school?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, the answer is Yes, she can take away your little car....

If it is so intolerable to live with your mother, then the minute you turn 18, move out, get your own place, go to work, become independent and then nobody will ever be able to take your car again.

She cant take the jeep away from you, like take your name off, but if you are under the age of 18 she has the right to enforce what ever kind of limitations on you as she wishes. like taking away your driving priveleges or grounding you. So, even though she cant actually take the jeep away she has the power to take you away from the jeep.

technically thats car theft, not GTA, but still highly illegal, now, dont tell her this, but if your just grounded, not alloud to leave then she can do that if ur under 18, over 18 you can come and go as you please and they cant do anything, and if they tamer with ur car u can call the police for that also, parents are so worthless these days, just cuz their life sux they think its ok to ruin ours when we're trying to make somthing of it in these hard times of minimum wage jobs and very expensive education to get the good jobs that enable you to live a nice comfortable life outside of work, rather that stuggling to pay bills and raise kids....so yeah, she needs to recognize that ur not out partying and doing drugs and stuff with ur jeep and time.....ur out there making somthing of yourself, unless u are out partying, then !!!dont tell her!!!! duh. so yeah, i do wish you good luck, i wish there was more i could do for everyone i know or have known to have strict parents and in the end it only turned them into rebellious irresponsible teenagers, rather than what they started out to be.
I hope things get back to normal for you...
