The larger the engine, the more it takes to run it.
V6 will burn more gas.

No V4's on the market now, theyre all I 4 or H 4s (ignore the idiot who said they dont exist, not in current use is not the same thing).

The size and configuration of the engine come into play a lot more than people acknowledge.

Both being the same style and size, the 4 has better mpg.

However if you consider a 2.5 V6 vs a 2.5 I 4 or H4 the mpg will be very close. You will also end up getting about the same power out of all three engines .

That is a tough question to answer. There are some V6's that get better gas mileage than a 4 cylinder. In fact there are some V8's that get better gas mileage than some 4 cylinders. If you have a 4 cylinder in a SUV or a larger vehicle and you have a V8 in a Corvette. You might have equal gas mileage simply because the Corvette weighs a lot less than the SUV. Some 4 cylinders are turbocharged or supercharged and that will sometime cause the gas mileage to be lower than that of a V6 or a V8. It all depends on the application of the engine and the weight of the vehicle is it moving. But, to answer your questions generally; if you average all the 4 cylinders engines against all the 6 cylinder engine the 4 cylinders average fuel economy will probably be better. I hope that helps.

There is no direct correlation. If you put a 4 cyl engine on a large vehicle, you'll be forced to push accelerator all the way down on a regular basis, and it will cause HUGE gas consumption. In other words, in the same small vehicle driven the same way, you may not notice much difference.
For example, my 4Runner with a 4.0L V6 gives me an average 20-21 mph while my friend's Pilot with a 3.5L V6 - only 17... Similar size, weight, smaller engine, worse gas mileage.

a V6 unless there's something wrong with the mentioned V4 that would make it use more. The more cylinders the more gas required...

not too many v4 engines around (I think Saab made one long time ago) most are inline 4 or i4, anyway four cylinder engines typically max out at 2500 cc or 2.5 liters while v6 engines go from 2.5 to 4 liters once you go over 4 liters in displacement then you reach the domain of v8 engines. Usually smaller displacement engines use less fuel.

That depends on many factors ergo;hp,cam.lifters per cyl.,type of fuel inj.,trans & rear end gear ratios, driving habits, in town ,open road driving, type of terrain, climate ,altitude , There are just too many issues to list. Basically unless you drive like Mario Andretti a 4 will of course give you more mpg. By the way, Who MAKES a V-4 ?If there is such a beast it would come from some foreign car maker and a price tag to match. So if you can AFFORD a car that will probably cost 65k + minimum why would the buyer be cocerned about mpg ???

V6 because it has more cylinders than the 4 Cylinder. Most economical cars are 4 cylinder cars.
