Usually a background check is only performed at the hiring stage and not done again during employment unless you reapply for a different position and or promotion. Not all companies actually do background checks so if this is a new job, tell him to inquire about the interview and hiring process. If he really wants it, I say go for it. If he knows he will have background check I say be honest. They will only do a background check once they want to hire you, at this point tell them about the misdemeanors and what you learned from the experience. If you are upfront they might make an exception!

The key is to not lie on the job application. If they ask you "have you been convicted" or "have you been arrested" there is a big difference. Answer the question truthfully and there won't be a problem.

Records will always be records thus there is no escaping. It is best for your friend to come clean and advise his future employer about his criminal records. It is then left to the future employer if he/she wants to employer your friend. Unless his crimes are serious I don't see why any future employer will not give him a second chance. Criminals need chances to enable them to amalgate back into society to stay away from crimes.

Most places do, but as long as you (or your "friend") don't lie on the application, and you have the qualifications, it usually does not hinder employment. That means you have to do really well on the interview.
