Look at your formulas. If there is more that one element in it, then it is a compound.
Ex. S8- 8 sulfur atoms. More than 1 atom, but only ONE element, therefore, S8 is just an element.
Also, be sure that you are correctly copying the formulas and abbreviations. CO is carbon monoxide; Co is cobalt.

Hi. An element only has one material. A compound two or more. You have CO in back of carbon monoxide (One C and one O) and also behind cobalt, but THAT CO is the abbreviation for cobalt.

Look at them! Sulphur and cobalt can be found on the Periodic Table of the Elements. Methane and Carbon Monoxide contain COMPOUNDS of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Why do you need help with something so simple?
