I'm reading Brave New World right now and I am kind of confused on what death conditioning is
...when John goes to visit his sick mom...what are all of those little twins doing in the room...that part kind of threw me off..

Also what is the meaning of 'Ford' being their God??

THANKS!!!

In brave new world everyone's environment is made to be perfectly comfortable. Everything they could want is provided for them, and everything is always pleasant. However, as we know, death is not pleasant and cannot be avoided so something has to be done. It is decided that children should be exposed to death early and have it made a pleasant experience. That way when they see death later in life they are not afraid of it or saddened by it.

The same could be said in our world about war. Children are exposed to G.I. joe and figher jets and video games. When they think of war they are not thinking of the horrors or real emotions. They are only thinking of their conditioning, that guns are cool, and how brave they would be.

The meaning of 'Ford being their God' has to do with the fact that the powers that be want to replace godly devotion with devotion to science and technology. They have substituded the concept of God with science and the word Ford has taken the place of God. The term Ford is taken from the name of the man Henry Ford who improved the assembly line process to assemble cars more efficiently.

So previously when people witnessed death they would deal with their intense emotions by turning to God, now in this novel they deal with all emotions by turning to salvation through science and reference Ford.

I haven't read the book in years, but if I remember correctly...

Death conditioning is just their way of preparing the children for what's going to happen when they die. Just like when they shock the children when they laugh or smile at the pretty pictures, it's a learning tool.

In the New World, there is no religion. They worship Ford instead. Hope that helps!

In death conditioning, they carry a group of babies to the hospital, where the terminal patients are resting. They show the babies games, they give them delicacies to make the kids understand that “the death” isn't important, only happens. It is part of their Neo-Pavlovian conditioning. Ford is considered a god because of his creation of the assembly line - the ultimate form of socialism at work.
