I just saw the film and find it amazing.....now I'm really interested in the original play. Whoever was pretending to be the headless horseman, why did he/shedo it?

Well...the original Sleepy Hollow (The Legend of) was a short story by Washington Irving. It is suggested that Brom Bones (Ichabod's rival) was the one pretending, but we are never told if it was the "real" Headless Horseman or not.

Brom Bones was pretending to be the headless horseman, using the story that the horseman was a Hessian soldier whose head was blown off by a cannonball during the Revolutionary War. Hessians were German soldiers hired by the British to supplement their troops.
