I had my baby 9 days ago and I had a fever since we came home from the hospital, but it just comes for a couple hours and goes away. I stopped taking the tylenol and ibuprofen for my pain so I am not taking anything anymore unless I really need it. I went to the doctor Wed feeling nauseous and weak and he told me that if my temp got up to 100.4 without taking the tylenol to come in and he will start me on IV antibiotics. Now I have this cough and I dont want to pass all my germs to my baby. Everytime he starts to fall asleep I cough and he wakes up. What is safe to take for a cough? I am trying to get ahold of the doc but I just wanted to know.

I am not sure about cough medicine, but maybe cough drops would help. Also, Walgreens pharmacists are fantastic at letting you know what is and isn't ok for a pregnant/breastfeeding mom. I'm sure my pharmacist shakes her head everytime she sees me coming, because I've always got questions!

Feel better!

I posted a link below to a great resource for cold and allergy medications while breastfeeding. I copied and pasted the secion about cough and sore throat medications:

"Cough & sore throat meds

Sore throat sprays or lozenges are generally considered safe, as are cough drops. Avoid eating excessive amounts of cough drops containing menthol. Large amounts of menthol can reduce milk supply.

Many forms of Robitussin, Delsym and Benylin are considered compatible with breastfeeding. Always check the active ingredients, as there are many versions.

Cough Medicines

Name of medication -- AAP approved?* -- Lactation Risk Category**
Codeine -- yes -- L3 (moderately safe)
Dextromethorphan -- not reviewed -- L1 (safest)
Guaifenesin -- not reviewed -- L2 (safer) "

I'm not exactly sure, but I know that plain Robitussin(the DM formula) is okay while pregnant. So I would assume it's fine while breastfeeding. It's best to try to wait it out until your doctor calls.

None, but you could use cough drops with menthol as the active ingredient. If you are sick and breastfeeding then you are passing antibodies to your baby. Therefore, your baby is less likely to get sick.

I took Robitussin while breastfeeding, but you need to wait for your own doctor's answer on this one.

Dont take anything until you get ahold of the doctor.
Try some lemon tea w/ honey.....that will help to soothe your throat.

Pediatrician gave my two small children "only" Robitussin so I am thinking it would be the best choice.
