Try pushing in the hard drive cables to make sure it is seated on the hard drive and on the mother board properly. A loose connection can cause the problems you are mentioning.
If that does not work you need to start spending some money. First try replacing the hard drive cable and if that does not work replace the hard drive. However since there isn't any moving parts in the cable it's most likely the hard drive that is bad. Moving part = parts that can break.
If a new hard drive and new cable doesn't help, then it's probably the disk controller, which is normally embedded in the motherboard. You can either get an add on card or a new mother board.

Hard drive is damaged, is my guess. Another possibility is motherboard is damaged, or dirty.
For me to give you an potentially accurate diagnosis I would need system specs, age, what you were doing when it crashed, most recent modification if any, what type of Windows XP and current service pack number, and any unique modifications to software or hardware. Also, has it been knocked around or moved lately?

Likely you got a virus. If it ever gets running you can try to do a system restore (windows command) or get a boot disk or start up in safe mode to trouble shoot if that doesn't work a shotgun at close range will contain the virus

From the way it seems there is a problem with the hard drive, thats why it is taking so long to install it, and your getting a weird screen, a sector might be damaged on the drive, i had the problem before also, so you might have to order a new one

It seems that your BIOS had been modified that's why you go to a page that says you have to press those keys...You will need your motherboard manual here. Check the memory slot of your pc if the memory module is being detected. You can detach and attach it. Check also your computer's battery and IDE cables...
