Hi is there anyone out there that can help.
I have made my own kitchen units out of reclaimed pine, and finished them to a high standard.
The problem I have is the worktop again made out of reclaimed pine. what is the best product to use to finish them to make them durable with water and grease about.

Don't use Varnish!!!! Oil is the best finish as it soaks into the wood rather than sitting on top. This means it won't chip or scratch like varnish. It can also be simply wiped over with another coat every so often to maintain the high standard of finish. Use any oil that is classed as food safe such as natural mineral oil. Watch out for nut oils, they are food safe but allergies are a big problem these days. Contact Chestnut Products for more information.

At least 3 answers suggest that you might want to leave the pine as is? is that the case?

The issue in any finish IE: stain, paint, varnish, poly, is that it's a kitchen counter top and will likely come in contact with food substances. Not a very safe/healthy mix.

If your prime interest is SEEING the wood, than certainly you can stain, and clear coat but use cutting boards etc, for any food prep.

I recommend a three coats of a polyurethane floor finish. This is durable and will stand up to most spills. I also recommend using several cutting boards in areas that will receive a lot of use. They can protect your surface and keep it looking good for quite a while.

They make a number of good products. Marine poly is good, but you might want something thicker. Check out pourable epoxy.

Try Junckers Rustic Oil. That's what I use on my kitchen worktops.

Here's the site I buy it from:
