For those that haven't followed this story, in summary, 8 federal prosecutors were recently asked to resign/fired. All of them had voiced opposition to Bush and were in-line to rule over some related cases to the Bush Administration. Some have even testified to Congress that they were directly contacted by the Bush Admin in attempts to sway their cases.
Gonzales, being the US Attorney General, has the authority to do this.
Now the White House is backtracking and cutting a deal.
" White House backtracks in row over U.S. attorneys"
http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/03/09/congress.prosecutors.ap/index.html?eref=rss_politics
"Just hours after Attorney General Alberto Gonzales dismissed the hubbub as an "overblown personnel matter," a Republican senator Thursday mused that Gonzales might soon suffer the same fate as the canned U.S. attorneys."
Should he be fired?

Absolutely, it just isn't the prosecutors being fired, the whole concept of both the patriot act and military act was done under his watchful eye, he okayed it and now we are finding out that the FBI is abusing the powers of the patriot act. I am sure he has hand in that too. It seems this whole administration is corrupt and borderline or is doing criminal acts on purpose for their own personal gain. In answer to your question yes he should be fired along with Cheney, Rice and Rove. But don't look for it to be done by Bush unless impeachment proceedings are initiated and then only to protect his own backside.

Good question! Yes. This another case that I believe goes much higher-to Gonzales. US Attorneys are federal employess in each state. They are considered a non political position. Three Republican Congresspersons called some of these Attorneys, asked about confidential information, pressured them to prosecute individuals, and after the attorneys said "no", they were fired by the Justice Dept.. Democrat or republican, we should be concerned that the checks and balances weren't working and are important.

First, those US attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President, and can be let go any time. Filling those posts are part of the political spoils system. They have no rights to those jobs. When Clinton came into office, he fired them all and replaced them.
Well, it all seems that the ruckus is because they didn't like how they were fired. Big freaking whoopee.
Not much of a "scandal", is it?
If Janet Reno wasn't fired for frying all those women and children in Waco, I don't see how people upset with their termination is somehow worse. Do you?

Absolutely he should! Bush & Cheney need to be brought to justice as well.
Over 30 Towns in the State of Vermont have filed impeachment resolutions against Bush and it’s spreading like wild fire! People are kicking this campaign into HIGH GEAR! Signs and banners are being constructed nationwide for the convergence on the State Capitol! This could be the long awaited revolution the American People have been waiting for since Bush took office.
The George Bush impeachment movement has arrived, it’s picking up momentum and just in time for the March 17 rally at the Pentagon. Here’s the best part! You don’t have to travel all the way to D.C. to perform your Patriotic Duty to America. There will be hundreds of impeachment protest happening across the Nation. Los Angeles is having a massive protest Saturday, March 17th 2007 at Noon.
These are just a few of the locations....
To find a location nearest you..Google. ‘United for Peace : Events’
I support our troops 100% and it’s time to bring them home!!!
As Americans it is time to make our stand to protect the Constitution and Fundamentals of what this Great Country was founded on. We can Bring Gonzales, George Bush and Cheney to justice just like Scooter Libby.
Thank you...together we can make a difference... happy protesting!

You stated the problem: "Gonzales, being the US Attorney General, has the authority to do this." He acted within the authority of his office, even if he had an ulterior motive.
Yes, Gonzales should be fired. For violating 18 USC 1001 by providing false and misleading information to Congress, and for violation of his ethical duties of comptence as an attorney.

In view of all the innuendo surrounding him, not only in this instance, but in the advice he has given the president concerning his abuses of the Constitution in several areas, I believe he should resign. He seems to interpret the laws far differently than any of his predecessors. He has completely lost his credibility.

tactics...that's all it is...tactics.
Congress is the one to blame for this because they blindly gave the "US-attorney-firing" power to the president. They didn't even read that provision in the bill when they passed it - LOL!
