This tranny whines loudly in 3rd & 4th gears only. It starts around 35 MPH but goes away when you let off the gas. I changed the fluid and filter and added Lucas Trans additive. There was nothing unusual in the pan but the fluid was brown like old motor oil. This van has 113,000 miles on it, is this trans junk?

from the sounds of it, it will be junk soon. I had a car that did that. One day, it just locked up and never ran again. I'd start shopping around for a new vehicle.

The planetary gear reduction ,or what some call differential is probably what is causing the noise,This unit i think can be changed without removing the transaxle

Are you sure it is coming from the transmission? How does it shift for you? Wheel bearings can give quite a howl & you will really notice at these speeds..
