No. It's a half truth mixed with pure fiction.

There was a feed available from two different sources. The better antenna was in Australia, but the antenna was in the middle of a windstorm during the Moon landing. The second antenna providing the signal was in California.

There was no way TV was going to risk having the Australian antenna lose the signal just as Neil Armstrong was stepping onto the surface of the Moon, so the poorer quality signal from California was used to distribute Neil Armstrong's first steps on the Moon. Immediately after Neil Armstrong's first steps, TV switched to the better quality signal available from the Australian antenna.

The only people that saw Armstrong's first steps from the Australian antenna were people at the tracking station and TV technicians. Thanks to a skilled antenna operator, the Australian antenna never lost the signal in spite of the high winds, so a few people saw Armstrong's first steps live in a higher quality picture than the rest of the world.

Over the course of the years, many people have seen the recording of the higher quality signal from the Australian antenna instead of the recording of the lower quality signal from the California antenna. In this case, people's 'memory' of the Moon landing is even clearer than the event they actually experienced.

The coke can part is pure fiction.

This is a composite of two stories. Most of the initial transmission of the emergence of Neil Armstrong from the capsule were received in Australia at the radio telescope near Parkes or the tracking station south of Canberra which has since been demolished.

The other side of the story is an old British comedy film in which our two klutzy heroes are made into Moon landing astronauts by a fictional British attempt to get to the Moon, with the hint that if they didn't make it back they'd be no loss. The rocket was launced from inland Australia and after our heroes land they find they are in a desert region. After looking about for a minute or so they see an antenna appearing over a hill, which frightens them somewhat. Then they see a Heinz baked bean can. Of course the rocket has come down within Australia and the antenna belongs to a prospector with a radio. This movie was made sometime in the early '60s and I saw it perhaps about '63 or '64.

That is the stupidest thing I ever heard. There was no other shot because there was only one camera. And it was on the frickin moon.
