For live music definately go see a show at Metro, this place is pretty unchanged since it's origins as a local/alternative music showcase. Also good is Double Door, say hi to Nate for me! For bigger shows/tours try House of Blues (great sound) say hi to everyone, I used to work there! The Vic, Aragon, and The Riviera are all great places to see shows, all very unique and typical of Chicago architecture. For who's playing where and when see the Chicago Reader at http://chireader.com

Chicago has a great Alternative scene. One of the best in the country. There are a ton of clubs to choose from. I would start here:

Of course while visting the Windy City, hit a few of the main tourist attractions. Millenium Park is new and pretty awesome. Navy Pier is nice for a laid back day and usually has some kind of event happening. Be sure to have a Chicago style hot dog and stuffed pizza while visiting.

There is tons of stuff to do in Chicago. Navy Pier is a must. You can go on boat rides there, mini golf, eat, ride the famous ferris wheel and so much more!! Also walk down Michigan Avenue and State Street. Take a boat tour down the Chicago River. Go to the beach (if you're going in the summer) cause the water is usually warm!! There is soooo much to do!! Chicago is the best!

I know what I would like to do if I ever go to Chicago...

I would like to go to Wrigley field, visit the Sears building (it's the tallest building in the US), go to the Field Museum and see the Ghost & the Darkness lions... If you'd like to find out about what's going on during the time you're there, then there's a good website.

As far as anywhere else with a good alternative scene, you should visit New York City, of course! :)

Hope you have a great time and welcome!

Austin, TX has a great music scene. But you have to have a Chicago dog before leaving the city.

Do you like baseball? If so, make sure you head to Wrigley Field and sit in the bleachers. Drink beers and eat hot dogs. It is off the Addison stop of the Red Line (subway.)

A few blocks from Wrigley is The Metro which has plenty of great musical acts in the "alternative" genre.
