Well, you're not going to get very good performance out of anything less than 512MB RAM.
I suggest buying 1GB of RAM and then installing Vista.. There's no reason to install it now.

From the link below, you need a system that meets these specs to reasonably run MS Vista Basic:
- 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
- 512 MB of system memory
- 20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
- Support for DirectX 9 graphics and 32 MB of graphics memory
- DVD-ROM drive
- Audio Output
I doubt the installer will prohibit you from running on anything less but I don't think you'll be happy with the results. Memory is relatively inexpensive so go ahead and bump yourself up to 2x512 (1GB total). I imagine that you could pick up the memory for about $60 USD per 512 MB stick depending on your requirements.
As for upgrading though, I'm going to stick with the majority here and ask why you are upgrading? I haven't seen a compelling reason to buy Vista or even install if it was included in new hardware or given to me as a gift. I've seen lots of forums and posts that indicate little reason to upgrade and more reasons to not upgrade (hardware issues, drivers, software support, performance - if you have less than top notch hardware). Unless you have a requirement that you run Vista, I'd wait at least until SP1 is released.

the basic version will run on your PC, but i think most other programs might run slow or not at all, since Vista uses most resources. You should keep using Windows XP (nothing wrong with it) untill you buy a new PC, its useless to spend a lot of money on software you don't need, only to make the richest man in the world even richer.

It will be very slow with that little of RAM. It will work but you will not be happy with it. If you want to go back to XP you will have to do a system recovery of your PC.
