I just found out Saturday I was PG. I went in for a quantitive HCG blood test on Monday (4 weeks and 3 days). My HCG level was 74. I did a follow up test Wednesday (4 weeks 5 days) and my count was 125. According to my doctor, these numbers are OK but my understanding is the level is suppose to double.

She offered to send me for another HCG test today (5 weeks). I had some light spotting last night and this morning. I took my lab order to the hospital lab since they can provide same day results. This is stressing me out and I did not want to wait until Monday. I just phoned my doctor to follow up and the receptionist (who all along is the middle person for passing me info) indicated the doctor said the recent lab work from the hospital cannot be compared to the previous labs b/c they were done by different LABS!? She did tell me the number was 154.

This is my 3rd pregnancy. The 1st ended in miscarriage at 5 weeks and the 2nd was a blighted ovum discovered at 7.5 weeks.

I already know I shouldn't stress but it can't be helped. I have called my Dr. several times... she's a great doctor but you can only be so much of a pain in the butt. So please, that's not that type of advice I am looking for -- I am seeking some reassurance, someone who can offer some insight on this, or share a similar experience. I don't want to hear call the doctor (I HAVE) or to just "relax" (I CAN'T).

All I can say is that your HCG levels keep going up - that is good. From what I've read the tests should be 3 days apart to have a doubled level. I think that going from 74 to 125 in 2 days is a good jump.

I'm sorry they did not use the same lab so you could have some relative numbers. I know waiting is the hardest part, but all I can suggest is to go on Monday and get another HCG from the last lab (the one that gave you a 154) and see if it has doubled.

Waiting is SO HARD!!! I'll keep you in my prayers. Take care.

I've always had my blood tests done at the same lab, so I'm not sure if there could be discrepancies from one lab to another. It seems there really shouldn't be since they are measuring the same thing. The good news is that your levels are rising. Maybe it might be a good idea to have another test done, either at the hospital or the first lab to compare the numbers. Although on average the numbers double, as long as their rising at a constant rate, I think it's still okay. There's really nothing more they can do right now. If you had a vaginal ultrasound, they could measure the sac, but the baby is way to small to be seen in it yet. By 7 weeks, you would be able to see the baby and heartbeat on a vaginal ultrasound. I know it will seem like eternity to wait 2 weeks, but seeing that would be a big relief. I would suggest asking the doctor to do one. Best wishes.

I too have had several pregnancies that ended badly. In the last the HCG level did not rise. Before that, too much stress and exertion caused me to lose early on. I am now 30 weeks on my 3rd pregnancy.

HCG levels should have doubled, approximately-note approximately- from a Monday to a Wednsday. Also, at 4 weeks pregnant you can expect some light spotting. Since you conceive usually in the middle of your cycle, 2 weeks after that is implantation (crampy and a little spotting) which can last for a few days. As long as the HCG is going up, you are in business. Trust me i know, been there done that.

I don't know the answers to your questions, but I hope everything turns out for you and that you have the child you are hoping for.

I've read that after more than one miscarraige the doctor can do a lot of testing to see what is causing the problem. Find a good doctor who can help figure this out, but hopefully this won't be the case and all will proceed smoothly!

Good luck.

I too had spotting with my previous pregnancy (at one point it seemed like a light period) so I know your concern!!! But there really isn't much you can do if the fetus is about to miscarry. If there is a rush of blood or anything you could go to the ER but I did this and they just did an ultrasound and told me to go home (so not much accomplished).
