As with all types of facial and body piercings, it is best to wait at least four months BEFORE changing out to a new style of ring or stud or half-circle. The reason for the waiting period is because the skin has to form its own channel around the piercing. Once the skin has done this, you may change jewelry with impunity!

Buy the jewelry you want and take it back to the person who pierced it. They should tell you if its healed enough for you to change it, and do it for you, after sterilizing the ring. Everyone heals differently. Don't do it yourself if you're not sure, because chances are, its not healed all the way and you changing it will only prolong the healing process.
