I say freely because from what I understand, there are currently only a few allowed and only 10% are inspected.

Btw, I caught only a piece of this story yesterday on CSPAN. Links are more than welcome and appreciated.

i believe it was a provision of NAFTA that trucks from either side could start crossing the border.

this provision has been held up for many years by both the us and mexico but bush has been pushing for it's approval.

on the us side there is a perception that these cheaper trucking companies will provide too much competition for american trucking companies. however the "official" complaint by american trucking companies/unions has been over the safety of the mexican trucks.

on the mexican side the perception is similar. mexican trucking companies/unions are worried that they would be put out of business because of the efficiency of the american companies. truth is mexican trucking companies are plagued by problems getting their shipments from one location to another which is usually caused by poor maintenance of their old truck fleets. they are worried that their mexican clients would pay a higher fee for guaranteed service.

currently trucks can only go 20 miles (i think) across the border.

i've got a link but it's to the nytimes archive and you have to be a times select member to access it.

As a former truck driver, I can tell you that this has been coming for a long time, it is another example of the Bush administration allowing cheap labor into the country and to hell with the consequences of their decision, I don't know if the Mexican truck drivers even have to follow the rules that I do, never been to Mexico, but when an American truck goes into Canada they can only load to come back to the states. They cannot load for a delivery in Canada. The same goes for Canadian drivers coming into the states. I wonder if the same rules apply to the Mexican drivers.

Mexican truck trailers have always been allowed across the border just not the drivers or their tractors. their trying to ease the traffic at the border by letting the drivers through and not having to have a American driver hook up to the trailer on our side. this will have the effect of not having to pay those expensive American drivers, and well allow a lot of uninspected and unsafe Mexican trucks on our roadways so everybody(meaning big business) wins.

Say thank you to all the politicians in washington, democrat and republican who care more about illegals than they do for us. As far as I am concerned, ALL politicians need to be thrown out and we need to start over and term limit everyone to one term only. The mexican trucks are dangerous and in Houston, a family was killed by one of them with the mexican national who was driving drunk.
