Mine is fairly new, I hold him quietly until he begins to relax and get curious.....then I hold him until I get bored. I will wrap him up in my shirt if there are other people around and wait till he feels like sticking his head out and examining them. He's a bit shy unlike my corns and kings who want to go from person to person to see what's up.
If there are too many people and he doesn't relax, then I put him gently back in his cage.

For a long time, most ball pythons are very calm and don't get stressed easy, when I had one I had it out and with me most of the time that I was home and he never seemed to mind it. When I put him back in he would try to get back out, he seemed to actually like being held. Not all balls are this friendly but alot are, have fun with your snake.

i can hold mine for as long as i care to.. but at first you dont want to hold him for more than 20 minutes or so because it will be very stressful for him.. but as he starts to get more comfortable being held, and you can see this by the amount and how he moves (if he doesnt move when being held, he's feeling fine.. and if his movement seems more curious than fearful, like hes trying to get away, he's fine).. should only take about a month of holding him everyday to get him there
good luck

If it is a new pet I would say a few minutes every day until it gets quite comfy with you handling him. As it gets more tame increase the time. You have to handle him at least every second day for him to stay 'mellow' or calm and tame.

as much as possible the handling wail its younger will determine if its tame or not, by handling i mean hanging out with you not being moved around too much, one way i like to familiarize my reptiles with me is to let in rest on my belly under my shirt, this will get them used to your touch and smell your plus will act as white noise soothing them and the warmth will make them cozy and want to stay
