How can people be encouraged to read more?

Reading paperbooks, yeah, but there's a whole lot of reading going on these days...This is the Information Age, and in order to get information we have to read. I am a writer, I write books and I believe in reading. I think people are not reading paper (books, mag, newspapers) as much because they are using technology as their source to get information more and more. I don't necessarily believe that people are reading less, I think we are actually reading more but in non-traditional ways.

Start small. Encourage reading articles, comic books, or even the first paragraph of an interesting news story in the sports section- something interesting to the reader.

Why do people read less now? Because entertainment is spoon fed through the Internet, TV and other media technologies. People do read online (as on this list) but it's a different kind of reading. In some ways it is more interactive, in others it's just spoon feeding.

Did you know that way back when books were becoming common parents used to complain that their kids were reading instead of doing something useful? With every new change in technology the concerns are repeated.

I wonder if some day people will be concerned when their kids are doing the latest techno-whatever and stop using the Internet as much.

Is being on the internet not reading?

That aside, I guess our society doesn't put a lot of emphasis on reading. Most people would prefer to watch the television or play video games...they both have more appealing aspects to them than reading. I do think people should read more though. Usually when I read it's because I'm cramming for an exam, so by the time the exam is over, I don't feel like looking at another book for a while.

Because kids are taught whole language in schools and not taught phonics. Then their reading comprehension skills fall behind and it makes reading too much of a chore.

Parents don't read to their kids nowadays because it's too easy to plunk them down in front of a tv (babysitter?).

Me? I love to read. There are books in every room of my home. My son is not an avid reader, but my daughter does. Both will read, but my son only reads when he's desperate!

Hubby is not a big reader, but he does read. I devour everything I can get my hands on, lol!

I am already starting to read to my granddaughter. She's 9 months old.

I guess people would rather be passively entertained instead of taking part. When I read, my mind takes me to entirely different places. I have a very vivid imagination.

To get people reading again, start with the little ones. And shut the televison off!!!!

Why are you here an not reading a book? Same as everybody else. Entertainment. TV, DVD's CD's, internet etc..... too much competition. I personally enjoy reading a good book. But I've also been raised reading books. It all starts in the cradle.
