Yes, I saw this foolish man's comments and I would think that they do not square with people in the real world. Murder should be punishable by life in prison and life should mean life now that we do not have a death penalty and it may even be more appropriate. If the prisons are too full or over crowded then build more of them and let criminals pay for their crimes. After all is said and done, there is no excuse for criminality and why should any criminal get away with it as too many appear to do these days.

This issue is always clouded by notions of revenge and retribution. Everyone has done something in their lives they are ashamed of and it would be unfair to judge everyone solely on the basis of their worst act. Murder is the worst crime and this is properly reflected in the prison sentences attaching to convictions for murder. The circumstances, impact and degree of deliberateness have a bearing on the sentence, as do the likelihood of doing it again. I don't think there is a simple single answer to what is appropriate.

Obviously the lord chief justice has not had any of his family murdered. He may think differently if he had. It's okay for him in his ivory tower to state that life sentences for murder is too long. I am of the opinion that life should mean life with no parole and no cushy cells either.

Bring back the death penalty. They choose the path they went down, then the punishment should fit the crime, or else hand them over to the victims family and let them mete out justice.

He wouldn't say that if his family were murdered. Any way it is all to do with the jails being over crowded Judges are being told to send less people to jail, And to make their sentence shorter, again its all to do with money. Give them the cat of nine tails. ( That is what I say.)

I agree life is too long for them. Hang them and they will be out of their misery.

The aim must be to ensure no repeat. 0ften that is acchieved far earlier.
Is it not better to give earlier release and let them be productive, instead of a drain on society?
Are we merely into punishment or creating a better society?
