Disney World in Orlando, FL. It's much bigger and better than Disneyland. It is cheaper if you don't stay on the Disney Grounds. If you are interested in American colonial history, then Williamsburg, VA. Boston, MA is an interesting city. Go to the NJ shore-stay in Atlantic City and gamble, or try one of the other wonderful beaches at the Jersey shore. Atlantic City is about 2 hours from NYC and there are special gambling buses from NYC. Other shore areas are closer. Washington, DC. The sights and the museums are free as is the zoo. Stay at a hotel near the airport in VA and take the metro (subway) to all the sights. While you are in California, see San Francisco. Chicago has many interesting sights. Go to San Antonio, TX, a charming Mexican/American city. You have to go to Las Vegas, there is nothing like that city anywhere in the world. If you go to Vegas, check out staying at the Polo Towers www.polotowers.com. You can get a room with a kitchen or kitchenette for less than the price of many regular hotel rooms. Also Vegas is cheaper weekdays than weekends. There is a half price ticket booth in the little mall in front of the Polo Towers where you can buy tickets at 11 am for shows that night .
In NYC, eat at the Four Seasons Restaurant, a world famous restaurant. Jacket and tie are required. You can get a $65 fixed price dinner there if you are seated by 6 PM Reservations are a must. Go to Century 21 near ground zero to go shopping to get designer items at discount prices.

I like the answer above but let me add some other advise.
Do NOT plan on taking the Bus or Train in the US. I had friends from Germany who tried to bus it. Both over 6'5" and 250 lbs and they were scared by their fellow passengers.
Rent a car or fly from city to city. The USA is big. For example Oregon, the state that I live in is about the size of Poland.

Las Vegas is also fun

Since you're going to be in California, you should take a day trip to Disneyland. Some other places in the US you can visit are the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, New Orleans, Washington DC (the nation's capital).

There are hundreds of pleaces to visit, but these are some of the biggies.
