I have router that is a few years old I was going to use a s a firewall. It has a LAN data rate of 10/100 mbps. Will this slow my connection down, and is it a good enough firewall.

The guys above are correct. The fastest home Inernet connections run at about 10 Mbps. Even if your router wasn't running at 100 Mbps, there's no way it would slow your Internet connection down. The only thing you would notice if your router was working in 10 Mbps mode is that large files transferred between your home computers would take longer. The Internet though? No worries.

A router is not a firewall, those are two different pieces of hardware. A router can be used as a sudo firewall if Network Address Translation (NAT) is turned on but it will not provide the full protection of a firewall. The 10/100 on the router's ethernet connection is the speed of the network connection and is equivalent to the network card in your system. It will not slow your internet connection but i do recommend getting a software or hardware firewall.

Dude get ZoneAlarm, it is a free Firewall and a better Firewall then just a router. Sure most routers have built in Firewalls, but you are better off using something stronger as well.

Now you just said it yourself 1 meg with a lan data rate of 10-100 meg. No slow down.

my suggestion is to get an updated router
things have changed alot in the past few years
buy the best you can afford
