If I had to choose, the best is clearly Mario Lemieux. The numbers don't lie, of course, and the impact is just as, if not, more significant. The worst is more fun: if someone wanted to, they could pick the infamous Alexandre Daigle (Ottawa 1993), the oft-injured Eric Lindros (Quebec 1991), or Greg Joly (Washington 1974). Have fun with this one!

Greg Joly was bad (as was Brian Lawton and Patrik Stefan) but how about Rick Pagnutti? Selected #1 in 1967 by the Kings and never played single game in the NHL.
As far as "overrated"--Doug Wickenheiser. He killed the Habs' franchise to some degree in the post-Bowhead era until Roy showed up.
Lindros was pretty darned good though (league MVP and all-star selections) but he just was so danged stupid skating with his head down too much.
Best--OK, Mario, of course, but Guy Lafleur turned the Habs from a great team (albeit after a few stumbles) to an all-time best ever dynasty.

Nash through Crosby were very good picks, but I would agree that Mario was the best (possibly the best ever, he would have more records the Gretzky if he had been healthy more....) Guy Lafleur was also, well, amazing....
As for the worst, Garry Monahan was pretty bad, Claude Gauthier didn't even make the team cut, Veilleux, ect. A lot of the early 1st overall picks weren't very good. Joly and Dingle seem like pretty bad picks too, I'll certainly give you that.

Well as you said it would be hard to pick someone other then Mario as best. As to worst, can't really say, as I don't tend to keep up well enough. I just wanted to say that I'm not sure I'd say Lindros though. He had the potential. He was expected to be great. How did they know he would never play?

The best is def. Mario Lemieux, we all know how special of a player he was. The worst that I've seen would probably be Patrik Stefan.

well i would also go for Lemieux as the best #1 draft pick and also with Daigle as the worst not because of his stats but because of the huge contract he received as a rookie and that really hurt the Sens.
GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
