My friends and I at work like to pretend that someday we will win the powerball...then never show up to work ever again

In most states if you are fired for cause, you cannot collect unemployment.

Not showing up to work would be cause, so nope, you probably wouldn't be able to collect it.

But why care? You would have big money!!!!!

You could file, but if you got fired from your job then you would most likely not qualify for benefits from unemployment, irregardless of the lottery winnings. You would need to look at the form from your state to see if there is a question that says something like "Are you receiving any other income from another source?" If they do ask that then you must report it to unemployment.

Depending on the amount and I'm assuming you all are hoping to win the MEGA MILLIONS, why would you bother, you would already have to deal with paying the taxes on the lottery? You do realize that you will have to report both the winnings and unemployment income on your taxes? Neither is scotch-free.
