Hi there
historically both languages have the same origin, as such you don't have to worry about vocabulary except for a couple of local idiosyncrasies. Also, in West Malaysia (Peninsular Malaysia) the language has developed an accent that might at first be confusing. On TV (news etc), and in Sabah and to a certain extent in Sarawak we speak what is known as 'baku', that is a language "without accent" and which is very close to Bahasa Indonesia. Grammar and are syntax virtually the same in both languages. Mingle with the locals wherever you go, you'll pick up their slang and colloquialism fast enough. The rest you know (words, grammar...).

if u have malay friends, talk to them in malay to catch up with the lingo. Certain words have different meanings like butuh in indonesia means wanting but in malay it is a rather offensive word. bangat in malay would be sangat. Lucu in indonesia means beautiful but in malay it means funny. beautiful we would normally say cantik or indah.

U can also watch malay movies, most modern movies are a mixture of malay slang and english. It's best to watch the old p ramlee movies where they still use better malay and the movies are better in terms of originality and values or you can listen to malay songs. Another alternative is for u to buy malay-english dictionary or malay-indonesia dictionary. U can also buy malay magazine but they also contains a lot of malay slang. Good luck.
