I have a Toshiba and I have an HP. They are both great laptops and would buy both again. I think it will just come down to preference. I wish I could give you a more precise answer but I have both and i like both....

Toshiba is more reliable than Hewlett-Packard. Most of them have Windows Vista, but you can probably buy one that has Windows XP. I have a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092 with a 17" monitor, Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2, and the keyboard has a keypad. It has 3 USB ports (2 in the back, 1 on the right panel), a DV/IEEE-1394 port, an Ethernet (RJ45) port and a phone line (RJ11) port. It has a monitor (RGB) port, an S-Video port, AC Adapter port, a security port, a wireless internet switch, an SD, xD, and M memory card port, headphone/microphone ports, express card slot, and a memory card slot, and a CD/DVD drive.

I have an HP and it seems to be a great machine for the price. I have several friends with Toshiba and they feel the same way so I would go with what gives you the most bang for your buck.

toshiba is the strongest computer impact wise (I mean if you drop it, it will not break)
other than that they are both good computers. I don't understand why people seem to think that two computers that have the same specs from different companies actually have one that is better. A computer is a computer. If the specs are the same then get the one you think looks best

I agree with Nick. Toshiba would seem better at your time. Better yet would be an Apple PowerBook, or an iBook or even maybe one of the newest models. go to apple.com or your local Apple Store (The one near Rockefeller Center is awesome!) to find out your type.
