Is it because its a time killer, because its a trend, and alternative to entertainment, what specifically is it that makes people purchase a video game console?

I purchase game consoles because I enjoy the interactive adventure aspect. This is a wonderful thing because there are those of us who are physically handicapped and cannot play sports, or go skiing, or even fishing. Video games simulate these experiences in the comfort of our own homes where bad weather is not a factor. They are also our constant companions ready to play whenever we are...even if it's 2AM and we can't sleep. A good video game always leaves you feeling that you can do better the next time you play. So it also provides a feeling of accomplishment when you beat the game or atleast your previous best score.

Another great aspect of gaming is that the more violent ones are a great way of releasing stress! My wife, for instance, after she comes home from work where she's been dealing with people that deserve to be shot can pop in a "Kill The Zombie"-style game, hook up the gun controller and have at it. She's as sweet as a kitten after she's pumped a few hundred rounds of ammo into Zombies that we all know represent the people at work! She gets to kill everybody - yet everybody lives! It's a win/win situation.

It is not an "alternative to entertainment"...it IS entertainment.

I even keep a PDA handy with games like Chess and Bible Study software on it so I'll always have something to do if I end up having to wait somewhere. It's great for visits to the doctor's office when waiting can be lengthy.

Thanks for the question. I enjoyed asking myself why I buy these things.

i have heard i dont have a life because i bought the wii and the ps3. but you know what, i dont smoke, i dont drink, and i like to game. is that so bad. i think its a way of escaping the horrors of everyday life. in life, you have to work all the time and then take care of bills. a good game can take you away, if only for a little while. and it is a stress reliever. when i get pissed, i pop in resistance and go crazy. lots of fun.
