Is it someone who belives with passion , or absolutely, or is it when they take thier beliefs to the point of violence that they are true fanatics. I know the term "fan" is short for fanatic and it may be true that fanatisism can be also defined as unreasoanble or unstable passionate belief?

What do you think? What does Fanatic mean to you? What are some examples? Tell Matticus he WANTS to KNOW.

To me I see a fanatic as someone who is obsessed and who's mind cannot be swayed from thinking differently.
You can be a fanatic about anything in society. It has its pros and cons, but I believe more cons than pros...especially if the belief in "it" controls your life.

A fanatic is someone who goes over the edge for their beliefs or their obsession. A good example is evangelists and Jesus Camp, it's nice for someone to find comfort through religion and believe in a higher power, but they take it to a level where its simply madness (just watch those late night televangelists and you'll see). It comes in all types though, those who are obsessed with a lover, an ex boyfriend/girlfriend, a tv show, but mainly it comes in religion (and sometimes atheism as well).

Since you posted this in philosophy, you're going to get an earful. We don't get to have OUR definition of any word. The WORD ITSELF HAS a definition.

It is inherently contradictory for you to ask us OUR definition. The definition of a definition is that it is independent of US and is a property of the word itself.

What you may have meant to say is How well do you understand what a fanatic is? Or what do YOU think a fanatic is? (implication that your opinion may differ from someone else's because of yours or their incomplete knowledge, not because it is a matter of opinion)

he he -

I'm a FANATIC about accuracy in speech.

That's one of those terms that has lost its power to inform. Nowadays, a kid who loves Pokemon is a "fanatic."

Personally, I'd say single-mindedness pretty much describes a fanatic.

A fanatic is a diseased person that would not hesitate to blow himself or his children up amidst innocent people to sustain his distorted belief.
