What harm is it gonna do, i mean the only people who will be allowed to smoke it are the cancer patients who really need it and it relieves a lot of pain for them.

I have often wondered that myself. People don't need to smoke it to be able gain it's benefits. My guess is that if they legalized it then American's would have to open up to the realization that there isn't anything wrong with smoking pot. There are many uses from helping with depression to pain management for people who have migraines and cancer patients. You want to know something else that is interesting? It can be used more efficiently at creating methanol than corn OR sugar cane. You can use it for very strong cloths also.

My guess, to answer your question, there are too many big businesses who would loose out because of the versatility of hemp. Drug companies, oil companies, fabric companies would all lose out if it were legalized and they didn't embrace it.

Because it's against FEDERAL LAW.

If Federal Law makes something illegal, then a state can not supercede the federal statute and make something legal.

All of those states that have "legalized" marijuana haven't legalized anything, which is why the DEA is still able to make their raids in states like CA. Which is why these people who are dealing medicinal marijuana in states like CA are serving prison sentences for federal crimes. Which is why the federal courts do not allow evidence that the state has legalized marijuana.

Personally, I'm completely for legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes -- hell, I think it should be legalized completely and taxed just like alcohol and cigarettes.

But the law needs to be changed on the FEDERAL LEVEL in order for states to truly legalize it.

The federal government takes a long time to re-legalize anything. They still have a hand full of people the federal government grows for and it is federally legal for these people to have.
More and more states are jumping on the bandwagon....

Kinda funny how the stuff that causes the cancer (cigarettes) is legal, but the stuff that helps ease the pain is illegal.

I'll give you THE reason. The liquor industry currently has a government mandated monopoly on mind altering drugs. You think they want to give that up? It's the slippery slope argument....

How do they know who are cancer patients and who aren't. It's very easy to pretend you are and get away with it.

They have not figured out a way to tax it yet.
Prohibition was in place until they figured out how to control liquor and tax it. The same holds true for this
