Heres the thing. Chinese New year falls between Jan 20 and Feb 20 every year. If you were born before that date you are the previous year's animal.
Example: If Chinese new year fell on Jan 31 for the year of the tiger and you were born before Jan 31 then you are an ox, the previous year's animal.
