Unless the situation was beyond their control, if they weren't motivated to finish school how can these people be depended upon to do a decent job in anything? Going to school is such an easy task, especially if someone is still in the educational system that pays for the schooling. I give a slight break to college people because they are responsible for everything: tution, books, any special equipment needed, etc.

Some people just don't think that high school is for them. If they have particular talents, they may not understand how a bunch of useless courses can help them in life. They feel high school is a waste of time, and they feel they can earn more money and succeed without it. Look at celebrities like Drew Barrymore or Avril Lavigne for example, both high school drop-outs.

Most often it is better than sticking around being bored, I dropped out at the age of 16, went on to learn the trade as a machinist, did very well and no regrets...that was years ago.. and I can't see much differance today.. most high schools are ok if a person needs credit to to to collage, but credit is all you get as the teaching is a flat zero..

I don't see what the big hurry is to get out of school. Life is hard enough, even harder without a diploma. My son wants to quit school and get his GED, I told him that a GED is a lazy way out. Education is the most important thing a person can have. If this is his choice then he can move out of my house.

I think it depends on the reason. American public high school has a lot of negative aspects to it, and I think it's understandable that some young people get to the point where they just need to get away from it, for whatever reason. And anyway, they can always take the GED!
