If you want to use lava rock, the first guy had it right. If you can find them, there is a product that looks like a charcoal briquet, but they are made from ceramic powder and wood. You lay them out on the burner grill about a half inch apart, covering the entire area. These give you a much better flavor than lava rocks. They last for quite a while. Mine usually made it through a whole season before I had to replace them.
Lowes used to carry them here.

Enough to dissipate the open flames so that only the flame tops are visible above the lava rock layer. Wood chips should only be used to flavor, using just enough to provide smoke, place them on a piece of aluminum foil so they dont obstruct and contaminate the lava rock.

We've gotten good results with the ones that look like hockey pucks. You also might want to consult the manufacturer of your grill.
If you need help with grilling times you might find the cookout calculator at charcoalbob.com helpful. Just enter the things you will be grilling and it will give you printable instructions for how to grill steaks, boneless chicken breast, pork chops, etc. It also has grilling tips.
